Hulk’s “Cloud Atlas” review and tangent on moralism give high hopes toward a Hulky consideration of Frank Capra.

Laymen commonly disparage Capra’s canon as maudlin, but he willfully examines the pessimism and cynicism opposite his heroes then stands firmly behind his ideals. Yet people continue to mock him as naive as though they have not witnessed Capra taking on all comers.

CAPRA IS WONDERFUL AND ALWAYS WILL BE. AND HIS MOVIES ENGAGE REAL DARKNESS, DESPITE THE SOMEWHAT PAT WAY THINGS CAN WRAP UP BUT THAT WAS LARGELY CONDITIONAL TO THE PERIOD.

The inherent darkness in most of the tales leads to a fun cycle every five or ten years when a jaded, cynical film fan sits and actually engages “Wonderful Life” or “Mr. Smith” or “Take It With You” then looks around the internet with a bewildered stare and asks,.”Have any of you watched this lately?” Without fail, every generation (sic) of critic has to reappraise their syrupy memories of the films, only to discover how much that Capra fellow learned in the intervening years.

Even with the pat endings, he usually leaves dark portents just off the edges of the screen. Claude Rains exonerates his younger proxy thus assuring Mr. Smith a measure of influence and powe..oh, shit. Those clubs help save Gary Cooper who is just about to affirm the sincerity of the manife–dammit.

It’s not unlike Powell and Pressburger, “For those who prefer, here’s your happy ending! and for the rest, some other stuff…”

THERE ARE MANY WHO SHRUG THEIR SHOULDERS AT A FILM THAT SPENDS THREE HOURS AND DOZENS OF UNIQUE WORLDS TRYING TO SIMPLY TELL US A SIMPLE MESSAGE THAT “KINDNESS IS GOOD.” – Geez, if I could spend every *day* proving that argument for the rest of my entire life, I would feel pretty freaking proud of myself. I like your brain, Hulk. And your blog.

I hate to tell tweets out of school but–

It seems unnecessarily harsh. Of all the filmmakers I’d expect to–if not enjoy–at least appreciate Carax’s film.
