HULK TALK SOUND IN MOVIES!

January 18, 2012

HEY ALL!

BANNER DID ANOTHER PODCAST! HURRAY! THIS ONE FEATURED ON THE SILVER TONGUE ONLINE (UK). IT’S THEIR “SLIP OF THE TONGUE” PODCAST HOSTED BY THE ERUDITE AND GRACIOUS WILL DONELSON!

IN IT WE TALK ABOUT THE CRUCIAL, VISCERAL IMPACT OF SOUND AND SCORES. AND HOW SOUND IS WHAT TELLS YOU, THE AUDIENCE, HOW TO REALLY FEEL ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE SEEING. FROM THEIR WE EXTRAPOLATE INTO MANY TOPICS INCLUDING CHAOS CINEMA, EDITING AT LARGE, WHAT IS ACTUALLY NOTICED, AND EVEN THE LOST FINALE.

*NOTE: GETTING TO HEAR BANNER’S VOICE IT CLEAR HE NEED MORE PRACTICE SPEAKING OUT LOUD. HE START SENTENCES BEFORE THE LAST FINISH AND REPEAT THE “THE THING IS” BEFORE SAYING WHAT ACTUALLY MEAN ABOUT 10 TIMES OVER… BANNER NEED PRACTICE OR HULK GONNA GET SMASHY ON HIS ASS.

I disagree that it’s a good thing, most of the time, for a score to be telling you how you should feel. The emotion, if any, should come from the power of the story, acting, cinematography etc. If a scene isn’t particularly well written but the sad music makes us sad, that’s lame. It’s a crutch.

HMMMM. HULK THINK THAT NOT NECESSARILY FAIR. BECAUSE THE MUSIC AND / OR SOUND IS REALLY WHAT CONTROLS IT. THE MUSIC JUST FEELS DISHONEST WHEN THE STORY OR MOMENT DOESN’T “MATCH IT” SO TO SPEAK. BUT IT’S NO LESS AN AMPLIFICATION THAN CINEMATOGRAPHY, OR DRAMATIC STRUCTURE, OR ANY OTHER NARRATIVE CONSTRUCTION. THERE JUST HAS TO BE HARMONY AND APPROPRIATENESS IN ALL PHASES.
