THE AVENGERS IS A JOSS WHEDON MOVIE

May 18, 2012

SO HULK REALLY LIKES JOSS WHEDON. HE MADE A LITTLE MOVIE RECENTLY. IT’S CALLED THE AVENGERS.

HERE’S WHY IT’S GREAT AND ALSO WHY IT TOTALLY FITS IN WITH EVERYTHING HE’S EVER DONE:

THE ANSWER IS AWKWARDLY, BUT STILL CONFIDENTLY. THERE’S A REAL GRAY AREA TO IT NO DOUBT, BUT A BIG PART OF HULK’S FEELINGS ON THE MATTER GO BACK TO THE AFOREMENTIONED ISSUES IS CONTEXT, INTENTION, AND AFFECTATION.

SHORTEST POSSIBLE VERSION: BASICALLY ARKHAM OVERUSED A WORD AND WAS COMING FROM A PLACE WHERE IT SEEMED LIKE IT HAD NO RESPECT FOR WOMEN.

AND AVENGERS USED ONE WORD IN A MOMENT DESIGNED TO GENUINELY INSPIRE TERROR AND THE PROJECT/DIRECTOR COMES WITH A PLACE WITH A LOT OF RESPECT FOR WOMEN.

BASICALLY ONE CAN MAKE A MUCH BETTER CASE FOR SEPARATING THE INTENTION MENACE IN ONE OF THEM FROM THE CARELESSNESS OF THE OTHER.

AND IT DOESN’T SEEM LIKE ARKHAM HAS LEARNED ANYTHING (30 SECONDS IN) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDeL95BsJMk&feature=player_embedded

AND OF COURSE, HULK ALWAYS WILLING TO JUST LISTEN ON THE MATTER. IT A VERY VALID DISCUSSION.

      • And possibly also other characters’ responses; Catwoman doesn’t ever really react to the goons in AA, nor do they ever seem to have any learning curve when it comes to calling her a bitch and getting the everliving crap kicked out of them in return.

The Harley trailer is dispiriting (and doesn’t look like it’s going to be anything more than just more of the same, game-play-wise).

Over here in Spain, they just translated it as whiny whore and I really didn’t notice it. The scene was really effective anyway and it just felt great watching Black Widow stick it to him regardless. What I did notice on the second viewing is that as far as the insults went, whiny whore wasn’t really noteworthy. In the spanish version there’s a lot of “fuck” “shit” “fuck you” and of course the ever present “cunt” (coño in spanish). Then again, if you’ve ever watched spanish cinema, you can see why we don’t shy away from foul language.

In any case, I am often left awestruck at how problemsatic it is over in the US to confront these issues. I mean, you’d think with such a long history of democracy and diversity that these issues would have been near solved. At least, that’s how I look at it coming from a country that was under a fascist regime until recently.

Also, the mewling quim thing just made it that much more hilarious when at the end of the film Loki’s mouth has been clamped shut. Smooth touch Mr. Whedon.

Another major difference, at least to me, was that Loki’s entire monologue was straight out of the classic sexist’s playbook. Loki reads Romanov’s femininity as a weakness, and intends to use that to exploit her. “Mewling quim” is as natural a climax to Loki’s misogynistic speech as Bartlet telling God “To hell with you!” in His own language in The West Wing’s brilliant “Two Cathedrals” episode. And it makes the revelation that Romanov was playing Loki all along that much more powerful (and, yes, feminist) a statement.
