He’s certainly more than a match for Diesel, who continues to turn into some kind of Gnome King or something. His head seems to be shrinking while his nose blossoms out and the thin layer of flesh holding in the hamburger helper with which he is stuffed seems tired and about to give up the ghost. All of Diesel’s lines sound like they’re coming through some kind of bass-heavy fuzzbox and the choices he makes in delivering them are baffling. I don’t know what kind of a movie he thinks he’s making. Still, as awful as he is on paper he’s arresting on screen, a sentient pork chop that occasionally drives cars. This is the ultimate niche for him, and hopefully he understands it. He is Dom, and Dom is he.

Thanks for the recommendations, Hulk. I like to read movie reviews that feel like there was more thought put into the movie instead of the critic’s turn of phrase. Even if I don’t necessarily agree with what their opinion of it is, it’s always good to consider ideas that may not have occurred to you otherwise. Gaining a deeper view or a greater appreciation for something is never a bad thing and a good critic can be hard to find.
Me am thank Hulk. These three reviewers be among favourites too for exactly reasons you am give. Interesting has been seeing growth of all writers over last years. Only getting betterer.

He seems to always be measured when he writes, and rarely sets out to blatantly destroy or praise something. I’m like going to recc you, too, because I think you have the same approach. Hulk – I’ve been going through your archives a lot over the last few weeks and there’s something I’ve been wondering a lot as I’ve been doing so that I hoped this column would answer once I found it. Sadly, the column did not answer my question so I will ask you myself. Do you read Outlaw Vern and, if so, what are your thoughts on him? He’s been my favorite film-critic for the last few years and you’re the first to start to edge-out McWeeny for my second-favorite in a long time.
VERN ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. SO IS MCWEENY. DREW’S BEST QUALITY IS THAT HIS IMPOSSIBLY FAIR TO EVERY SINGLE THING HE READS. THIS IS NOT TO IMPLY OTHER CRITICS ARE SOMEHOW “UNFAIR.” JUST THAT DREW’S ALWAYS SEEM PARTICULARLY SO.
You mentioned McWeeny’s ‘fairness’ in the above essay, and I really liked that analysis. It articulates something that had been intangible to me before about why I like his writing (even when I find myself perplexed by his taste at times). I would like to add a bit and say that I think he’s one of a small handful of critics whose inclusion of personal/autobiographical elements in his writing is generally 100% relevant, and that the reason for this has to do with the ‘fairness’ you talk about. I think that more than any other critic I’ve encountered Drew uses personal anecdotes to specifically illustrate biases he has towards specific films or specific elements of films and/or to demonstrate reactions to films. I almost never feel like he’s bringing something up to name-drop or brag or turn analysis into autobiography. I feel like he gets autobiographical as a means to get deeper with the texts he is working with and/or highlight possible alternate reactions to them. I love that he writes about films as both texts and experiences and, because of that perspective, the anecdotal elements become absolutely essential components of his methods and writing.
YEAH, HIS NERD 2.0 SERIES (WHERE HE RE-EXPERIENCES MOVIES THROUGH THE EYES OF HIS KIDS) IS ONE OF HULK’S FAVORITES

Not sure if you’ll read this, but I was wondering if you had any particular recommendations on feminist critics? (doesn’t necessarily have to be female, it’s just a topic that has interested me lately). If I look, I can find plenty of feminist blogs that go on about the portrayal of women in media, which is fine, but I was thinking something more like this, in terms of analysing how a movie did/did not work on storytelling level, but also with how it didn’t work for that particular commentator because of issues a,b and c in the portrayal of women?
I hope that makes sense. Also, this is an awesome blog, and one of the most enlightening things I’ve seen recently on story-telling in the visual medium.
