LOST BOTH ATTEMPTED AND SUCCEEDED IN DOING THINGS MOST OTHER SHOWS NO EVEN TRY: IT HAD RICH, TEXTURED CHARACTERS,  AN INTERNATIONAL CAST, USED MULTI-LINGUAL AND SUBTITLED DIALOGUE, PROVIDED SENSUOUS CINEMATOGRAPHY THAT WAS, FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD, “CINEMATIC,” CAPITALIZED ON ITS VIBRANT SETTING, HAD STUNNING PRODUCTION VALUES, WROTE AMBITIOUS STORY ARCS, INCLUDED DEEPLY-LITERATE REFERENCES, WENT INTO INTENSE AND COMPLEX SCI-FI CONCEPTS, BRANDISHED A GOOD OLD-FASHIONED SENSE OF HUMOR, AND EVEN DISPLAYED A COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF NEW MEDIA IN ORDER ADVERTISE THE SHOW/INTERACT WITH FANS (HELL, IT HELPED SHAPE NEW MEDIA). EVERY DETAIL JUST SEEMED RIGHT: FROM THE HAUNTING OPENING TITLE SEQUENCE TO OFT-SUDDEN ENDING TITLE STAMP AT THE CLOSE OF EVERY EPISODE. IT STRUCK A CHORD DEEP DOWN AND COMPELLED THEM IN WAYS A TV SHOW OFTEN DOES NOT. SURE THERE WERE RELATIVE LEVELS OF THAT INTENSITY, BUT THERE JUST SEEMED NO SUCH THING AS HALF-INVESTED LOST VIEWER. FOR SOME, IT JUST PURELY VISCERAL: A JOURNEY INTO BOTH THE MYSTERY OF AN ISLAND AND THE MYSTERY OF THE CHARACTER’S LIVES. FOR OTHERS, THE THEMATIC LEVEL OPENED UP A WORLD BEYOND THE SHOW, AN ONLINE COMMUNITY, AN EXPANDED UNIVERSE, AN EVOLVING DISCUSSION ABOUT LIFE, ART, STORYTELLING, RELIGION, SCIENCE, AND BEYOND. BETTER YET, THE SHOW COULD EXIST ON THAT CEREBRAL PLANE WHILE RARELY SACRIFICING THE THINGS THAT MADE IT UNIQUELY HUMANE. AND DARLTON, HULK IMAGINE THAT NAVIGATING BOTH THE CREATION OF THAT ENTITY AND THEN PERPETUATING IT MUST HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT THINGS IMAGINABLE. HOW DID THE SHOW SATISFY SO MANY PEOPLE? FOLKS WITH A HOST OF DIFFERENT VALUES?

HULK BELIEVE THE ANSWER = “THE ANSWERS.”

FIRST OFF, HULK BOTH UNDERSTAND AND NOT UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE CLAIM THAT LOST NEVER ANSWERED ANYTHING. HULK PERHAPS UNDERSTAND BECAUSE THE SHOW RARELY RELIED ON “THE REVEAL” FORMAT OR CONVENTIONALLY REVEALED TWISTS WHERE THINGS SUDDENLY DAWN ON AUDIENCE (I.E., THE WAY MANY  PROCEDURALS CONCLUDE AT END OF EVERY EPISODE). AND THE FEW TIMES THERE WAS BIG “REVEAL” IN LOST IT OFTEN ANSWERED THE QUESTION WITH EVEN DEEPER MYSTERY, BEST EXEMPLIFIED BY THE NOW-FAMOUS “KATE, WE HAVE TO GO BACK MOMENT!”

HULK JUST WANTED USE THIS AGAIN... AND TO BE FAIR, THEY HAD TO GO BACK

BUT AT SAME TIME HULK NO UNDERSTAND HOW PEOPLE CAN REALLY THINK THAT, BECAUSE LOST ACTUALLY ANSWERED THE VAST MAJORITY OF OF PLOT, CHARACTER, THEMATIC, AND THEOLOGICAL CONFLICTS THAT WERE INTRODUCED. SERIOUSLY. FOR EVERY HANGING QUESTION THERE, LIKE, 3 OTHERS THAT WERE TOTALLY ANSWERED. AND CONSIDER THE ALTERNATIVE: ALL THE TIMES THE SHOW RESORTED TO ACTUALLY VERBALIZING ANSWERS VIA MONOLOGUE (OR SOMETHING EQUALLY LAME) IT RESULTED IN THE LEAST-INSPIRING OR LEAST-CATHARTIC MOMENTS IN THE SHOW (LIKE WHEN MICHAEL JUST SHOWS UP AND EXPLAINS THE WHISPERS VERBATIM). SO HULK ACTUALLY THINK DARLTON WISE TO TRY AND SHY AWAY FROM THEM. WHAT’S MORE, THE SHOW ULTIMATELY MADE IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR FROM BEGINNING THAT IT JUST NOT INTERESTED IN VOCALIZING THE EXACT STATE OF PLOT NARRATIVE. EVER. SO REALLY, IF SOMEONE COMPLAINING ABOUT LACK OF ANSWERS IT SEEM TO HULK THAT THAT SOMEONE NOT REALLY UNDERSTAND THE SHOW THEY BEEN WATCHING FOR 6 YEARS.

DESMOND’S ELECTROMAGNETISM PAYING OFF AND TOTALLY PLAYING INTO THE STORY . LINUS’S ATONEMENT. THE BIG MYTHOLOGICAL ARCHPOINTS, EVEN THE ISLAND KEYSTONE, BECAUSE HULK TOTALLY COOL WITH IT BEING THE “ON/OFF” SWITCH EVEN IF SOME FELT IT ON THE NOSE.(2) MILES GETTING HIS DIAMONDS. WHICH MEANS HULK’S PROBLEMS ALL ABOUT THE LAST 15 MINUTES IN THE FREAKING CHURCH.

HULK KNOW. HULK KNOW. LOTS OF FOLKS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE LAST SCENE AND FOR GOOD REASON, BUT HULK LISTENED/READ EVERY RESPONSE POSSIBLE. SOME TRULY GREAT, SOME INSPIRED, MOST KINDA BLAND AND UNSUPPORTED. BUT HULK ALWAYS FELT LIKE THERE SOMETHING MORE THAN THAT. SOMETHING ABOUT THAT SCENE THAT NOT JUST PROBLEMATIC, BUT SOMETHING THAT VIOLATES THE SHOW’S CORE IDENTITY.

AND HULK BELIEVE THE SOMETHING = THIS: IF LOST‘S TRANSCENDENT QUALITY HOW IT PLEASED THE MAN OF SCIENCE AND THE MAN OF FAITH, OFTEN WITH A SINGLE GESTURE, THEN WHY IN THE SERIES-DEFINING-MOMENT OF THE FINALE DID THEY DECIDE TO JUST PLAIN STOP DOING THAT?

AT FIRST, THE SHOW WENT ON AND ON FOR HALF OF SEASON ESTABLISHING A SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT FOR TWO CONCURRENT TIME-LINES CONTINUING IN EARNEST. IT REALLY JUST SOME BASIC IDEAS IN STEPHEN HAWKING’S “A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME” REGARDING PARALLEL WORLDS CONTINUING FROM A SINGLE POINT OF INFLUENCE. THEY DIVERGE AT THAT POINT AND THE SCIENTIFIC THEORY BEHIND IT = A) RATHER SOUND AND B) A DEEPLY INTERESTING ANALYSIS OF TIME AND SPACE. IT SEEMED THE GOAL NOT EXACTLY TO BRIDGE THE TWO WORLDS, BUT HULK GOT THE SENSE DESMOND NEEDED TO INFORM THE OTHERS FOR THE PURPOSE OF “SAVING” THE ISLAND MISSION AND THIS WOULD LATER HAVE ADDED BENEFIT OF GOING FORWARD IN THEIR NEW LIVES, KNOWING THEIR “OTHER” HISTORY IN THE ALTERNATIVE TIME-LINE. THE SHOW REALLY, REALLY TRIED TO MAKE THIS INTENTION CLEAR.

AND THEN IT JUST TURNED OUT THEY WERE DEAD.

YES THERE SOME INTENTIONAL VAGUERY INVOLVED IN THE REVEAL, BUT THE WAYS IN WHICH IT IS CLEAR LACK = COMPLETELY UNSATISFACTORY, ESPECIALLY FOR LOST STANDARDS. AND SO, THE FOLLOWING 10 PROBLEMS CONSTITUTE THE WAYS THE LAST 15 MINUTES OF FINALE ULTIMATELY FAILED THE SERIES.

HULK JUST CAN NO GET OVER IT. THE FINALE JUST FELT LIKE WAITING FOR CHARACTERS TO JUMP THROUGH HOOPS AND BEATS THAT ALREADY HAPPENED. THERE NOTHING “NEW” TO IT. THEIR MOMENTS OF TRANSCENDENCE = EMOTIONAL BEATS WE ALREADY HAD SATISFACTION OF REALIZING.

ON A THEMTATIC LEVEL IT REPETITIVE. AND ON A DRAMATIC LEVEL IT DOWNRIGHT SUCKS.

IN SCREENWRITING, THERE A LOT OF TALK ABOUT CLARITY AND ECONOMY. A MOVIE OR TV SHOW MEANT TO OPERATE IN TERMS OF BOTH. HULK KNOW THAT LOST BOTH THRIVED IN AND OPERATED UNDER THE VEIL OF MYSTERY AND ALLURE. BUT CLARITY AND ECONOMY MATTER IN THE LONG RUN. UNFORTUNATELY, THE LAST 15 MINUTES CAME WAY TOO CLOSE TO THE MONKEY SPEECH.

IN THE ENDING MOMENTS, AS HULK SAT BEFORE HULK’S TV,  WATCHING THE LAST FEW MINUTES, HULK WAS DEEPLY WORRIED AND INTERESTED, ACHING FOR STORY AND THEMATIC CLARITY. THEN CHRISTIAN SHEPARD LOOKED ALMOST DIRECTLY INTO THE CAMERA AND LECTURED RIGHT AT HULK, TELLING HULK A GREAT DEAL OF WISHY-WASHY SENTIMENTS AND WAS ESSENTIALLY BEING EVASIVE. MORE SO, HE SAYING THAT SAYING HIS EVASIVENESS CRITICAL TO HULK’S CATHARSIS… NOW… HULK WOULD HOPE AT THIS POINT IT EVIDENT THAT HULK NOT SOME SNOT-NOSED, HIGH-SCHOOL-LEVEL, INDIGNANT TWERP WHO NO LIKE BEING TOLD WHAT TO THINK. JACK WANTS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENING AROUND HIM AND CHRISTIAN TELLING HE CAN NEVER KNOW. NOR SHOULD HE TRY TO KNOW. HE MUST EMBRACE HIS LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPT IT. CASTING ASIDE THE RAMIFICATIONS OF THOSE WORDS (AND ODD POLITICAL DEDUCTIONS THAT COME WITH IT), THERE SOMETHING TO THE OUTRIGHT TELLING THAT DEEPLY UNSATISFACTORY. IT NOT JUST WITHHOLDING, BUT IT OUTRIGHT TELLING THE AUDIENCE “HEY! I’M BEING WITHHOLDING! DEAL WITH IT!” IT FAR MORE PATRONIZING THEN THE MERE DRAMATIZATION OF WITHOLDING, WHICH WHEN DONE WELL CAN BE TRANSCENDENT (I.E. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, MADE ROUGHLY SOME OF THE SAME POINTS IN STARK, GORGEOUS, DRAMATIZED FASHION). EVEN THE INFAMOUS JACOB/MIB EPISODE HAD CONTEXT-LESS LIGHT/ENERGY DESCRIPTION; THE CONTEXT-LESS CORK; ALL OF IT PART OF THE SHOW’S OWN MONO-MYTH AND THEY WORK. ALL BECAUSE THEY PLAYED INTO BASIC STORY THEMATICS.

WHICH JUST MAKES THE CHURCH SCENE FINALE PRETTY FUCKING WEIRD. IT DISTURBINGLY ECUMENICAL.  THE CHURCH. THE PEWS. CHRISTIAN SHEPARD. THE LAST 15 MINUTES OF LOST JUST FOR THE MAN OF FAITH.

AND HULK CANNOT RECONCILE THAT. HULK HAS TRIED FOREVER TO TRY AND MAKE THE FINALE WORK IN HULK’S BRAIN, TO WRESTLE STUFF OUT OF THAT LAST SCENE AND APPROXIMATE SOMETHING THAT RESONATES. SOMETIMES IT FEEL LIKE HULK COME CLOSE. LOOKING AT THE HISTORY OF THE SHOW AND PARTICULARLY SOME INFO IN THE LAST SEASON, IT REVEAL SOME BITS OF HOPE. HULK WILL SOON LINK TO MMORSE’S GREAT BIT ABOUT MINKOWSKI SPACE (WHICH OBVIOUSLY RELEVANT BECAUSE THE MINKOWSKI CHARACTER APPEAR REGULARLY). THE WRITERS WANTED TO LEAVE A BIG BOLD OPEN ENDED ANSWER BUT THEY DID IT IN THE WRONG WAY. IT NOT OPEN ENDED. IT A LAUNDRY LIST OF CONTRADICTIONS. AND UNLIKE BEFORE, IT NOT LIKE HULK FEEL LANY ONE OF THEM COULD BE TRUE (THE “ALL ANSWERS IN SUBSET B” THING). INSTEAD HULK FEEL LIKE NONE OF THEM COULD BE TRUE.

AND AT CORE, THE PROBLEMS REALLY ALL THE SAME.

ON EVERY CONCEIVABLE LEVEL, IT NEVER FELT LIKE LOST.

PART 4 – WHAT THIS MEAN FOR HULK, GOING FORWARD

ON ONE LEVEL, OF COURSE THIS INSIPID. PEOPLE INTERNALIZE THEIR LOVE OF PROPERTIES. THEY NO DIGEST AND PROCESS THEM. JUST SIMPLY ABSORB EVERYTHING IN EMOTIONAL AND VISCERAL TERMS. AS A RESULT, THEY OFTEN TAKE THE REPULSION TOO FAR, AND YES HULK SPECIFICALLY REFERENCING THE POPULAR “GEORGE LUCAS RAPED MY CHILDHOOD” VIEWPOINT. THE SENTIMENT RIDICULOUS, INSOLENT, GUARDED, ADOLESCENT BULLSHIT. ONE THAT COMPLETELY LACK PERSPECTIVE. WHY? BECAUSE GOING THAT FAR IMPLY THE ORIGINAL STAR WARS FILMS DON’T STILL EXIST OR HAVE INHERENT VALUE. AND BOY CAN THE ORIGINALS STILL BE ENJOYED. BETTY HADN’T SEEN THEM SINCE SHE WAS A KID SO SHE AND HULK WATCHED A FEW YEARS AGO. IT WAS PURE JOY. EVER SIT A LITTLE KID DOWN IN FRONT OF THEM? STILL WORK LIKE GANG BUSTERS.

BUT HERE THING… THE PUBLIC CONVERSATION CONCERNING STAR WARS VASTLY DIFFERENT NOW. THE ORIGINAL MOVIES ARE NOT TARNISHED, BUT THE PREQUELS HAVE UNDENIABLY AFFECTED THE BEHAVIOR OF THE CULTURE, HOW WE TALK ABOUT GEORGE LUCAS, AND EVEN MANY OF THE PLOT IMPLICATIONS OF THE ORIGINALS. AS INTERESTING AS MCNULTY’S SERIAL KILLER FEINT OR TEMPLETON’S OVERT BOLD-FACED LYING MIGHT HAVE BEEN, NEITHER PLOT FELT LIKE THE WIRE. BUT IT DIDN’T MATTER, BECAUSE THE FINALE CORRECTED THAT AND GAVE THE SHOW THE MOST PERFECT SEND-OFF IMAGINABLE. THE SAME EXACT TONE-FIXING THING TRUE OF THE LAST SEASON OF BUFFY TOO. FINALES MATTER. THEM THE BREAKS. IT REALLY HOW YOU FINISH.

SO WHEN IT COMES TO LOST, EVERY SINGLE THING HULK SAID ABOUT THE SHOW IN PART 1 OF THIS PIECE, STILL ABSOLUTELY TRUE. THE SHOW ACCOMPLISH SO DAMN MUCH AND SHOULD BE LAUDED FOR YEARS TO COME.

BUT STILL, THE CULTURAL CONVERSATION HAS CHANGED.

AND THAT CONVERSATION ALWAYS SEEMS TO LAND ON THE FINALE. AFTER THE FIRST SEASON OF LOST, HULK WAS RUNNING AROUND EVERYWHERE TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO WATCH THE FREAKING SHOW. IT WAS INCREDIBLE, RESONANT, FULL OF SO MUCH PROMISE. AS SEASONS WENT ON HULK BECAME MORE HESITANT, WAITING TO SEE IF THE SHOW COME THROUGH. MAYBE COMING THROUGH WAS IMPOSSIBLE. MAYBE THEY TRIED ACCOMPLISH THE MOST DIFFICULT TRICK EVER, BUT HULK HAD FAITH BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS PULLED IT OFF THAT TRANSCENDENCE BEFORE. AND THEN THE FINALE LET THE AIR OUT. THE CONVERSATION FIXATED ON THE BASIC APPROPRIATION: UNLIKE BATTLESTAR OR EVEN THE SOPRANOS, WHOSE CONVERSATIONS FOCUSED ON THE VARYING INTERPRETATIONS OF LARGELY SYMBOLIC MOTIFS, THE ENDING OF LOST SIMPLY CAME DOWN TO A MANNER OF “I WAS OKAY WITH IT” OR “I WASN’T OKAY WITH IT.” THE EFFECT HAS BEEN DISHEARTENING.

  1. I have never watched LOST. Well, I watched a single episode once, but it was halfway through the second season, I was quite young at the time, and I was, understandably I hope, a little confused by it all.

    That said, I read all 4000-odd words of this column with great interest. Hulk, I have to say, your understanding of the mechanics of storytelling is absolutely incredible, and when I read your stuff – even when it’s about TV shows I’ve never watched – I always feel like I come away having learned a lot.

    So, seeing as I have nothing to contribute in terms of LOST discussion, I’d instead like to take this opportunity to thank you, for never failing to be both interesting and enlightening.

    While I basically agree with everything you said, what bugs me the most about the Church Scene ties with your points about the sentimentality and the wait-why-ar-they-all-together-again of it all. It’s the fact that it’s all for the benefit of the audience (actually, for the benefit of a particularly annoying subset of the audience, but whatever). In other words, they betray the core concepts of the show – as you brilliantly demonstrated – just to end things in a happy note, even if it was a false happy note.

    In other other words, the characters act like they are super-important to each other because they are super-important to US. Not only this fucks up the drama of the scene (and the season) but I find it incredibly condescending, like: “Hey, stop thinking, It’s GROUPHUG time. We know in the end you didn’t watch the show for the smart parts, it was all about how much you love these people, right? You’re so CUTE!”

    I believe the creators even stated that it was a “parting gift” to the people who were wth then every step of the journey (i.e. us), or some bullshit like that. Know what would be a good parting gift? A fucking satisfying ending, that’s what.

    It’s the worst kind of breaking of the 4th wall and I hate it.

    I also hate the whole of season 6 (the stakes were never clear and the Jacob vs. Men In Black thing was impossibly dull, but that’s a whole different story).

      1. Yes, that too, absolutely. I don’t know if you watch it, but there was a lot of that in the final few episodes of The Office with Steve Carell – people breaking character left and right just to give him a “poignant” send-off. The show has sucked for a long time, but this was terrible.

      2. Hey Hulk, I think you’re a brilliant film/television analyst. You articulate things I never could. That’s especially relevant when it comes to Lost, because I found it very difficult to put my finger on what bothered me about the show, particularly the ending. I agree with what you wrote in the comment I’m replying to. In fact, I wrote this myself in a comment on The AV Club after the finale: “I think they went with that ending because of the affection they (and most fans) had for the characters. But it was misguided. Fans of the show didn’t want to be coddled and comforted; they wanted to be thrilled and touched as they had been during the show’s high points. Ending simply with Jack’s redemption and death as the other characters fly off would have been perfect. I remember that as soon as Jack walked into that church, I started saying out loud, “please no white light, please no white light”. And sure enough, they went with that limp cliché.”

      1. It’s a beautiful film. I haven’t seen it in 10 years but when I did it melted my stone cold heart and made me weep. I usually have a hide so thick that it hasn’t been penetrated by a sentimentality attack since early childhood.
        It plays a dangerous game as a narrative and flirts right on the precipice of outrageous sentimentality but never loses its footing.
        For years I maintained that to truly succeed a film must illustrate both a universal truth about the human condition and also reveal something about the mechanics of cinema and the end frame of Afterlife achieves both those things in a stunningly succinct and revelatory fashion.

        It also succeeds where LOST ultimately stumbles in imagining a satisfyingly non-denominational purgatory. Whilst the concept of purgatory might be fundamentally Christian the idea of ‘unresolved business’ at the time of death purvades all cultures and Afterlife tackles that headlong without ever invoking ‘religion’ in any obvious fashion.

        Anyway, enough of my yakking. Suffice to say I heartily recommend it to anyone.

  4. This is an incredibly thoughtful piece, and I really appreciate your maturity (re: “George Lucas raped my childhood”) because it’s such a common, and completely ridiculous, reaction. (Seriously, you didn’t like the prequels? You felt “raped” by a TV show? Go commiserate with an actual rape victim, see how that works out).

    So, anyway, there are a few points I’d like to address, because even though you mostly hit in on the nose, there’s a few things I feel a little differently about.

    I’ll preface it with this quote, from Dr. Shepard:

    “The most important part of your life was the time that you spent with these people on that island. That’s why all of you are here. Nobody does it alone, Jack. You needed all of them, and they needed you.”

    Now, sure, you’re right that the last 15 minutes came with some uncomfortable info-dump lecturing. But, to me, this is the most resonant line.

    Here’s the heart of the show, when you look back on it: A bunch of supremely fucked-up people crash land on an island. The island is weird. So are they. They try to work their shit out, while at the same time working out the weird shit on the island. Oversimplication, right?

    The show was about the characters, their relationships with each other, and how they help each other, right? To get past it. Sure, Libby may not have had some grand, sweeping relationship with Hurley, but look what she gave him. She showed that an attractive woman could be interested in him. That he is more than what he believes himself to be. For a character like Hurley, that must have come as a great deal of comfort.

    Sayid and Shannon: Yes, also together for a short time. But, look what they gave each other. Sayid cared about Shannon for more than her body. He saw what was inside, and what she was capable of. Shannon showed Sayid that he didn’t need to be so glum, that he could still find love outside of Nadia.

    I’m extrapolating a little bit, but what I’m saying is, the reason these people are standing alongside each other in the parallel universe/purgatory playground, is because they had done something significant for each other. They arrived somewhere that their past lives didn’t matter, but they weighted heavily on these people anyway, and these OTHER people managed to bring them some degree of comfort or self-realization. (i.e. “You needed all of them, and they needed you.”)

    This is getting long, but the point I’m trying to make is that these characters were Lost in a physical sense, but also in a psychological sense (I know this is obvious, just pointing it out for the point I’m trying to make), and the show was never about being found physically, it was about being found psychologically. Now, yes, the ending was a little much, and the only way to make it more overbearing would have required a “Found” title card at the end, but the point is, these characters brought each other some resolution and comfort. That’s why they still matter, even in the “afterlife.”

    Anyway, yea, so there’s that. I also think a lot of the consternation over the ending is that they tried to present a metaphysical concept in a physical way, and that’s just not easy, but hey, at least it’s ambitious.

  5. Let’s face it, LOST was never going to end to anyone’s satisfaction. While it kept me wonderfully intrigued for 6 seasons and provided some of the best realised drama on television it opened too many narrative doors over its (protracted) duration to give the writers a bats chance in hell of providing all the requisite answers. It spiraled out of control. Anybody who could conceive of one singular, overarching conceptual solution to every unanswered question and unexplained mystery would need to be in possesion of mental computational power far in excess of current human development. Perhaps the ‘star child’ from the finale of Kubrick’s 2001 would have written a blinding final episode but nobody else could.

    Which would all be fine if I was prepared to accept the open-endedness of it all when presented with the theory that ‘it was all in the service of a purgatorial experience; all those intrigues, mysteries, non-sequiturs, and just plain batshit mental moments were only ever supposed to have the weight and logic of a lucid dream if they served to deliver the characters to a particular psychological state of grace at the conclusion’. But I’m not.

    It doesn’t add up. Through 6 seasons, after the point at which it transpired that all of our principles had been killed in a plane crash the Island took most of them to hell and back about 2 dozen times, put all of them through the most unbelievably tortuous mental anguish, yanked them about with absolute cruelty – constantly pitching from one life or death predicament to another – for what? To help them resolve the issues at the time of their death? A cup of tea and a hug would have done for most of them.

      WHAT PARTICULARLY UNSATISFYING WHEN CHRISTIAN SAY BASICALLY SAY “THE ISLAND WAS REAL AND YOUR TIME THERE MATTERED MORE THAN ANYTHING” AND HIM SAYING THAT LITERALLY THE ONLY THING THAT IMPLIED THAT IT MATTERED. THE THING HULK LOVED ABOUT LOST THAT THERE SO MUCH MORE TO THEIR LIVES AND STORIES, THAT THE ISLAND ALMOST FELT INCIDENTAL IN SOME WAYS. PEOPLE JOKED ALL THE TIME ABOUT HOW NONE OF THE PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS SEEMED INTERESTED IN TALKING ABOUT THE ISLAND’S MYSTERIES WITH EACH OTHER OR FIGURING THEM OUT. IT WAS JUST A PART OF THEIR LIVES, NOT THEIR TOTALITY.

      AND REALLY THE “HOWS’ OF THE PURGATORY CONCLUSION NO REINFORCE CHRISTIAN’S STATEMENT EITHER.

      1. It’s blindingly obvious with any hindsight, isn’t it? An airport – the modern world’s stepping off point. And in the context of the series, the ultimate departure gate.

        Again ‘Afterlife’ would have provided the perfect template for the writers as it culminates in exactly this juncture; what happens at the moment of ‘ascension’ (or whatever the fuck terminology one cares to use to say ‘the purgatory bit is all dealt with here folks’).

        A Church (or a Synagogue or a Mosque – though LOST clearly did a perfunctory ‘let’s not exclude anyone here’ redress of a very Protestant church) seemed a very alien imposition on the world of LOST having barely ever featured as a location in the whole of a 6 series run – which compounded the sense of a bum steer.

      2. Ace work Mr Hulk!

        I’m pretty sure the writers couldn’t have ended LOST without some sort of Christianity based reference. The show is (as someone else says below) pretty much Jack’s perspective of life and being guided by his father’s misgivings. Also, lets not forget the poster campaign for the finale (or was it the entire last season) with The Last Supper imagery. I think its understandable and justifiable to go this way – just maybe not as heavy handed! I’m not a religious man either but I will say that I was surprised how much it moved me.

        The show could quite rightly have ended with an airport and loaded the scene with hints towards what is effectively Jack’s realised faith but joining a chunk of the cast together ANYWHERE seems rife with problems*. They were surely already on ‘the place they made for each other’ so a reunion seems unnecessary. They mostly made their own journey to the church anyway, right? Ambiguity is what stitched the show together, teasing us with personal interpretation issues and making us watch more. To end with the ‘clarity’ of being told not to worry about working things out was again too heavy handed for me but maybe that was the intention. It was Jack’s final conscious moments, not mine. His peace was this acceptance.

        If a person’s consciousness provides the elements to their own afterlife, then where do you fit all the references that no longer hold the same values. By this I need an example. My grandad on my dad’s side probably loved me but he died before I was 6. In my afterlife will he see me as an adult or a 6 year-old? For this reason and many others I don’t believe in an afterlife. Its a confusion of things I only half understand and I don’t have a shepherd to correct me. If something changes that then I’ll probably have a Jack-face too!

        This is just my opinion and if I had my way for everything then many people would be unhappy! I enjoyed the show in peaks and troughs but have a furrowed brow for normalist types who need/want everything spelt out in caps.

        Jings! There was a fair amount to read already & I really didn’t mean to write all this. Must be testament to the good work of Lindelof and Carlton. Not so puny now, eh?

        * If you buy the whole church scene then why was Michael’s actions on the ship not deemed worthy of the final meet? The Aaron ‘plothole’ is surely justifiable by the fact they crashed in the first place so was never really born. Also, I’m with Hulk on this – no Nadia, no meaningful relationship! The list goes on. There’s too many narrative collisions to have a reunion shot.

    1. And it would have been an appropriate metaphor that would have alliterated with all of the other uses of airplanes in the series, no? At that point, it might have pushed the Lost entire opus into allegorical territory.

      Instead the church felt jarring because all of a sudden, we are not seeing a metaphor, they are in a place that has maybe a symbolic meaning but in the context has a stronger literal meaning than everything the show had done right up until then.

      It forced me to reevaluate all of the use of symbols and metaphores to think whether they were literal or figurative.

  8. Thanks loads. I was pretty deeply upset by the finale myself, and you have done a wonderful Jon of expressing what made it upsetting. But if I may add,

    As an athiest or agnostic, (depends on what day of the week it is honestly) I am constantly bombarded with religious imagery, symbolism, themes, ideas, ect. And I don’t HATE it, because it speaks to much of human society and our shared history as an art producing species. Films and such that are straight atheistic can be wonderful as well, and make me feel like I am not alone in my feelings and viewpoints.
    But LOST managed for so long to serve both ideas (Science and Faith) that on a certain level it expressed the thematic hope that people of all these types of belief can “live together.”
    Which is a wonderful, hopeful, peaceful message.
    To have it then pull the rug out and essential say “JK, scientist need to give up or go to hell, ” is to reiterate one of the WORST statements that religions make. That any one with a different idea of the world or the afterlife is punished.
    It made me very sad.

  9. Great stuff here. Thanks for getting my mind going all over again. As a fellow, “man of science”, let me share my take on what seems to be called the Purgatory. I actually viewed whole “flash sideways” as the flash before Jack’s eyes before he died at the very end. Because i viewed it in this way it made the whole “religious vibe” pill much easier to swallow…in fact, i kind of like what they did here. I’ve always believed that rationality was my religion, and throughout this series my beliefs were never attacked or disagreed with, then all of a sudden at the very end they through a curveball…they made me question what was beyond science. because science can only go as far as human intelligence, we must accept that is is flawed and ever changing, so this finale addresses those flaws. I really don’t believe it advocates blind faith, it advocates deeper questioning by us science folk and religious folk alike, and how can that be a bad thing? it asks us to, instead of accepting that nothing happens after death without question because we as humans do not “know” of anything, to instead accept that we don’t have all the answers quite yet, and to stand in awe of that concept…LOST never shows us the afterlife, they only show us the minutes before death, the white light beyond the church is representative of the afterlife or lack there of, and the finale portrays that we have no effin idea. But they try to make the point that no matter what we believe (or do not believe for that matter), it doesn’t matter. We should all be able to find some sort of common ground and allow others to believe as they must. After all, Everything that Rises Must Converge. Many parts of this finale were overtly christian, but I believe that is becuase we were viewing things through Jack’s perspective, who is the man of faith afterall.
    That brings me to was another thing that was at first hard to swallow about the finale..the characters all together, logistics of it all didn’t quite make sense. But looking back I think it is because during the finale the characters all of a sudden became very symbolic as opposed to “real” characters. There “real” storylines were concluded on island. The flash sideways allowed for the characters to become symbols of mankind and the island to become a symbol of life, i.e., what these people did during life is what really matters, the relationships they made etc.
    I could go on all day, but you have already done so in such an intelligent way that I will stop now…but I just have to say that amazing critiques like yours are the exact reason why the LOST finale, in my opinion should not be viewed as a failure…what other show can we say has kept us analyzing a year and a half later? While finales like The Wire and possibly Sopranos were amazing, they left me feeling content, and were forgotten within a week…the LOST finale shook me to my core and has forced me to re/overanalyze my own belief system. Kind of sad for me and amazing for the writers that a tv show could do that.

I would say that we are actually arguing the same point but through 2 different lenses…I would even venture to say that the true meaning of religion relies on science…in my mind “god” would be the ultimate understanding that science strives for…when viewed in a symbolic way religion doesn’t have to be the blindly following thing that it seems to have become…its unforntunate that the root of it can’t be regrown…but I understand that most do not see it that way and that there are many intricacies of each religion that cause them to stand at odds against eachother and against science, possibly rightly so…it is just unfortunate because the disagreements over the differences can leadto hatred and wars etc and maybe it doesn’t have to be that way, live together die alone and such…but anyways, I am getting more sentimental than the effin church scene.

  10. Wasn’t there some implication in the final episode that showed us that the island was real, aside from Jack being told it was? For some reason I think there was a lot that went on BETWEEN the final scene on the Island and the scene outside the church.

    Something about Hurley being the new Jacob or at least being in charge on the island. I haven’t seen the finale since the night it aired, and my god has it only been a year-ish?, but I think that speaks more to what you were trying to point out. I was a shrugger.

    I remember watching it and thinking that it was wrong and then never watching it again to make sure. I was an avid fan, watched every episode live and recorded them in case any of my friends missed it and I could watch it again with them. i even watched a lot of the “pop-up” reruns to glean some new mythos knowledge. I know I was excited about the last season, but after the finale, I don’t know…I guess I “moved on”. Perhaps that was the ultimate genius. A way to help usher the crazed fan-base out of their life with the show. By making the finale something we wanted to walk away from.

  11. Reading this for the first time after your link to BD. So, so good, and I can sympathize with your paragraphs re: your Faraday/Desmond T-shirt. I own a Locke “Don’t Tell Me What I Can’t Do” shirt. Kinda hard to wear when the person ended up being unable to do the things he wanted.

    The church scenes in the finale were bad, but I submit that the entire 6th season was just plain off. The sidewaysverse, the return of Claire, the Temple / Lighthouse stuff (How can you waste John Hawkes???) … It was all a notch below the seasons that preceded it. Worse, it felt like the writers were throwing crap against the wall, which is what they were accused of doing before, but in the last season, that feeling is acute.

    I own the series on DVD, but I have yet to bring myself to rewatch them, which is disheartening, considering how much I adored the show before the final season.

  13. Well now I finally got around to reading HULK’s big long essay on the LOST finale, and surprise to find out it’s not that bad as all that. although yeah, the idea that LOST is a bad uncle who abused HULK sexually is a bit over the top.

    Because it looks like HULK liked LOST a lot, so it’s more like a really great girlfriend who just turned out not to like HULK’s favorite book or movie of all time.

    What HULK may or may not realize is that LOST and MULHOLLAND DRIVE are very much the same thing, and that Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse (and JJ Abrams) were channeling the same afterlife pan-religious hybrids that have been done by David Lynch. Yes. There may be thousands of other iterations of this purgatory throughout civilization, but if anyone asks me the questions: What is The Island? The short answer remains: Ever see TWIN PEAKS? It’s The Black Lodge. It’s the shortest and, most accurate answer.

    HULK seems to be aware that The Island is purgatory (not just season 6), which means, yeah, they all died in the plane crash. I know the showrunners will never admit this for the most important reason. The show will be watched anew by kids who get old enough to watch it, so technically the show is impossible to understand — viscerally — if you know from the get go, that Jack is dead. … But you know he’s not really dead. Look at it like this HULK, you know how that white van in INCEPTION took a really long time to hit the water after it they drove it off the bridge? You know how Mal and Cobb lived a full lifetime in their dream limbo. Well six years of TV may have only been an instant inside Jack’s brain. So maybe Jack isn’t dead on The Island, at least not yet. But he didn’t die — in the real world — because some smoke monster possessed some guy he ended up having to kill to save an Island, he died cause the plane he was in crashed. That’s a sad death in the real world.

    And I think HULK is pretty aware of all that cause HULK is not having an issue with any of this, even if it was or wasn’t true is not the issue.

    HULK just didn’t like that last 15 minutes in the church.

    And yeah, I get why that is, but I am going to, yes, yet again, use another text to try to get to the heart of the matter, cause here’s the thing. A lot of us morons really really liked the finale. I mean, lets take a step back because if HULK thought the scene between Sawyer and Juliet at the vending machine wasn’t powerful stuff, if HULK thought that was just poopy pants sentimentalism, then I should just stop reading HULK, cause HULK may know a lot about movies, but HULK would seem to have lost touch with why normal people (people who don’t know as much about movies) watch…. movies… and TV, …. And stuff.

    It’s not about what you write, It’s about Sawyer saying “I got you Blondie.”

    So yeah you have all these nice remembering scenes, and then what if LOST just ended the moment he touched Kate at the concert and started remembering himself, Just delete the church scene? HULK probably would have liked it more, who knows? The funny thing about this is that HULK is then not your every day LOST finale hating hater, Cause HULK didn’t like it — not because it said too little — HULK not like it cause it said too much.

    HULK felt condescended too.

    And yeah, I get why that is, Because the other text I am going to bring up is Lynch’s FIRE WALK WITH ME. In the end of this movie Cooper puts his hand on Laura’s shoulder and her angel (not named Vincent, I guess) comes and the movie just sits on this image for like 10 minutes, as Laura’s unease so slowly morphs into a blissful smile. There are no words.

    This is a different way of handling the same thing, HULK would probably think a better way, Cooper didn’t stand there and give Laura a long speech that could be made fun of by people who ultimately chose not understand what was going on. But for HULK, someone who seems to understand what was going on, that darn speech of Christian Shephard’s is deflating.

    Just saying I get why that is.

    Compared again to, say, BSG, where instead of Starbuck/angel returning to a light in a church, we see Apollo talking, she disappears (kind of like Betty in Mulholland Drive, eh?), and he’s stranded. He knew. He’s still a fool. That’s pretty gut wrenching too.

    This is all just to say Cuse and Lindelof could have handled all this, all this mono-mythological story in any number of different ways, and they chose a speech in a church. But it wasn’t just a speech in church, and if HULK chooses not to see images in allegorical or metaphorical sense, then I think HULK again misses the point of putting moving images on a wall to tell a story. Essentially, for all the thousands of words Jensen wrote about LOST, the fun of it is going down those rabbit holes. (i have my own theory on the hatch that would make Jensen sound perfectly sane), Jensen was ultimately right to point out that final scene is VISUALLY ANALOGOUS to the plane coming apart behind them. If HULK can’t see that, or consider that then HULK misses a big part of why TV Shows and movies are great.

    This has been fairly long, but oh well. I guess I too now regret that the writers chose a clumsy worded speech in a church as it does seem to have tarnished what was a fantastic show for so many people like HULK who now feel like wearing a t-shirt is no longer enjoyable.

    Too bad, if you want an honest opinion. The show didn’t exist so fanboys can feel good about wearing their t-shirts (although Lindelof and Cuse I am sure would never admit this, too! — they need fans to get work!! Fans = $$. $$=good), no that’s not why good art exists.

    The show existed to get Jack to move on. And, well, I’m sorry, but it looks like Jack needed a speech in a church to get there.

  14. This is really great. I probably had a different reaction to the end (mine could be summed up as “huh…” I liked the notion of simultaneity in the after life, it was an interesting concept) because I watched it all very quickly (with a lot of Kate-Jack-Sawyer scenes being fast-forwarded through in the first two seasons– it just wasn’t clicking for me) and didn’t have the investment that comes in week-to-week, season-to-season viewing. I never had to sit and stew over an episode, spend months wondering about what the next season would bring, etc.– I just clicked “next episode” and went on.

    I do believe that they were originally intended to have been in purgatory the moment they hit the island, but I understand why the writers had to shift direction, and that was a good thing. I also think that they started to run out of episodes as the series wound down and the church-thing ending was the quickest way to terminate what could have been a potentially much longer thread. It reminded me of the second season of Heroes where the inevitable writers’ strike led to a rushed and truncated season. As the end of the sixth season loomed, they ran out of room to turn the ship around and just slapped on a punctuation. I do think that there was an intention to bring the two timelines back together, but that’s neither here nor there; the show we have is the show I should be talking about.

    Anyway, this is a 3:30am way of saying that you convinced me that the end was poor far better than anyone else has. I was just so indifferent that it didn’t matter that they were in purgatory/dead all along/etc. because these are, I suppose you’d say, Tangible Details. I didn’t get why those things made the ending per se bad– they didn’t alter the fun that we’d had leading up to it and I, personally, didn’t want anything explained too explicitly. The way that the inconsistencies and problems are highlighted in this piece make sense and aren’t just simply pointing at things that *feel* wrong. Great work.

    And look! I read and wrote all of that about a show I could take or leave, that definitely says something for how compelling your writing is.
